The pandemic has brought us to a crossroads:
Do we look to return to schools as we knew them?
Or do we reinvent the classroom experience for a new, and somewhat uncertain, future?
Prior to the pandemic, learning in schools was "teacher-dependent:"
Students' actions in terms of what to do, when to do it, when to speak, and more were led by the teacher.
The core of instruction was the lesson, offered by a teacher to introduce content.
Teachers relied on their students' compliance, following the teacher's plan and direction.
Teacher-dependent instruction fell short of its academic promise during the pandemic. Teachers, students, and parents were stressed and educators are talking about learning losses, the need to prioritize SEL, and the need to address greater equity gaps.
What if you could design learning environments that could withstand obstacles, build students' academic resilience, and allow students to learn anytime, anywhere? IDE Corp.’s decades-long experience in designing student-driven learning, proved itself during the pandemic, when client teachers who were implementing our Learner-Active, Technology-Infused framework were able to simply pivot to a home-based learning environment and keep going. This success caused us to consider the structures and strategies that any teacher could use to ensure that students could continue learning whether in school or at home: “learning anywhere, anytime.” At the core of this “learning anywhere, anytime” environment are seven attributes:
An atmosphere of continual motivation
A landscape of opportunities for academically rigorous learning
A climate of executive function (Appendix B)
A culture of social and emotional learning
A foundation of student responsibility for learning
A network of purposeful and productive facilitation of learning
A structure of meaningful data-driven learning
Our four-day workshop on “Reinventing the Classroom Experience: Learning Anywhere, Anytime” focuses on six key goals:
Increase student ownership and responsibility for learning
Build academic resilience in students
Prioritize executive function and social and emotional learning where needed
Ensure equity throughout the learning environment
Leverage technology and all of the learning opportunities available through it to shift the teacher’s role to curator of rich and diverse learning experiences
Position teachers to be facilitators of learning, coaching students in their personal academic journeys
The district may choose an optional extension to six or eight days if they wish to provide teachers with more time to design materials to utilize in their classrooms, supported by the facilitation of a consultant.
One IDE Consultant will facilitate an in-person or remote 4-Day workshop for up to 20 teachers on Reinventing the Classroom Experience through the lens of the 7 Attributes of Learning Anywhere, Anytime. Workshop Dates TBD.
During the school year, teachers will receive monthly (September 2021 to June 2022) job-embedded coaching with the consultant as they design and implement their reinvented classrooms. These days may also be utilized to facilitate PD sessions as well.
The district should purchase for each teacher and administrator a copy of Dr. Nancy Sulla’s book Reinventing the Classroom Experience: Learning Anywhere, Anytime. The book may be purchased directly from the publisher: Routledge (www.routledge.com) — through John DeFalco, Associate Account Manager. John will give clients purchasing sets of the new book with another book a 50% discount. Given the learning losses and SEL needs that resulted from the pandemic, we are recommending districts consider purchasing Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement. You can reach John at 212-600-3474 or john.defalco@taylorandfrancis.com.
